The picturesque harbor of Gustavia in St. Barthélemy
|
|
St. Barth's popularity in the world of yachting is due in part to its geographical location about midway between Antigua and Virgin Gorda, two major sailing centers. While still uncrowded, the island could take, if necessary, 500 yachts, most of course, at anchor. Gustavia's harbor, 13 to 16 feet deep, has mooring and docking facilities for about 40 yachts. There are also fine anchorages at nearby Public, Corossol and Colombier. St. Barth has all the conveniences sailors need: fuel, water, ice, a well-stocked chandlery, supermarkets, duty-free liquor and fine French dining. Colorful events on the yachting calendar annually are the St. Barth Regatta (celebrated just before Lent), the Saint Barth's Cup (held in April and sponsored by the Saint Barth Yacht Club) and the three-day International Regatta in May with racing events. Charters for as little as a half-day to a month or more are available from a number of companies in St. Barth. Options include everything from bare boat or crewed charters to hourly Sunfish rentals. Full day sails with snorkeling, lunch and a full bar thrown in are a popular all-inclusive choice. Fishing boat charters are available through several companies on the island. Full-day charters (with meals and drinks) or half day charters (drinks only) are available with fishing gear for four included. Big game sport fishing is also offered. Most fishing is in the waters north of Lorient, Flamands and Corossol. Popular catches include tuna, bonito, dorade, marlin, wahoo and barracuda.
